Domestic Violence Therapist
Position Summary:  
Provides and coordinates the delivery of quality professional counseling and advocacy services to adult survivors of domestic violence participating in services and programs administered by RAVE-Ionia/Montcalm, Inc.  Duties include but are not limited to crisis intervention, individual counseling/therapy, support group facilitation, community education, emergency legal advocacy, personal advocacy as well as criminal justice support to survivors of domestic violence.

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates and provides individual counseling sessions.  Develops and implements client service plans which focus on goal-oriented empowerment strengths-based counseling offering empathy, support, advocacy, and education on the dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Coordinates and facilitates educational and support group activities for primary and/or secondary survivors of domestic violence.
  • Provides crisis counseling, telephone or in-person crisis intervention, emotional support and emergency criminal justice support and advocacy to survivors and their families.
  • Completes initial intake and assessments pertaining to safety, health, and support systems, developing a personal safety plan with each participant.  Prepares client case intake file and makes appropriate internal and external referrals. 
  • Completes outreach, intake, and follow-up contact activities to referred survivors and current program participants, promoting increased knowledge of resources, support systems and services for survivors.
  • Prepares and records case observations, progress notes, service plans, and units of service, completing required statistical reports as required by agency policy and funding sources.
  • Advocates on behalf of survivors to secure rights and services from other agencies and the criminal and civil justice systems.
  • Provides information and referral to all survivors regarding RAVE-Ionia/Montcalm, Inc.’s services, other community resources and agencies, and public awareness about survivor’s services.
  • Arranges for survivors and their children to enter housing at a RAVE-Ionia/Montcalm, Inc.’s safe house, other safe shelter, or permanent housing.
  • Provides assistance in filing crime victim’s compensation claims on behalf of survivors.
  • Answers and responds to crisis calls.
  • Engages in legal advocacy activities on behalf of survivors to obtain personal protection orders and other protective orders. 
  • Participates in assigned community awareness activities, which may or may not take place during regular business hours.
  • Promotes increased learning and teamwork to ensure clients receive quality services by attending and participating in case reviews, internal meetings and attending conferences and workshops as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
  • Participates and serves as representative to community groups and organizations.
  • Participates in staff on-call supervisor rotation.
  • Participates in the overall daily upkeep and cleanliness of counseling and supportive service spaces including office, counseling rooms, and sheltering facilities.
Requirements of Work:
  • ​Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence and its impact upon individuals, families, and communities.
  • Ability to use critical and quick thinking to address crisis, on-going support and advocacy needs for program participants.
  • Must be able to work independently and function well under pressure.
  • Will read, understand and implement RAVE-I/M, Inc. policies and procedures related to providing quality services to program participants.
  • Must maintain a professional, courteous and helpful demeanor always when working at or representing RAVE-I/M, Inc.
  • Ability and commitment to abide by comprehensive confidentiality policies and procedures of RAVE-I/M, Inc. 
  • Ability to express facts and ideas effectively orally, and in writing in a manner that encourages effective working relationships with other employees, agencies, volunteers and participants. 
  • Possess assessment and organizational skills and be able to implement RAVE-I/M, Inc.’s Mission and Philosophy in all program activities and comply with RAVE-I/M, Inc. Code of Professional Practice in its entirety. 
  • Must be committed to the concept of empowering women and children and be able to relate to women of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Will successfully complete staff orientation and training.
  • Must agree to and be able to participate fully in required pre and continuing employee screening and background checks, including areas of past and current employment, personal references, educational verification, criminal background, driving record and Central Registry Background or equivalent Clearance.
  • Have working telephone, valid driver’s license, and reliable vehicle with valid registration and insurance.
​Desirable Minimum Training and Experience:
  • Master’s Degree required in social work, counseling, psychology, or another related field. 
  • Previous experience and training on the dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Previous experience and training in the provision of counseling, crisis intervention, and group dynamics.
  • Previous experience in leadership roles desired.
