"The state House proposed reducing funding for Michigan’s Crime Victims' Rights Fund by $4 million from last year — down to $26 million".
The Crime Victims Fund was created when the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) was passed in 1984. The Crime Victims Fund provides states the funding necessary to help organizations serve survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
This upcoming fiscal year, we are seeing a decrease in those funds to states. Governor Whitmer has recommended that we use $50 million from the state budget to help with VOCA funding. Unfortunately, with the current gap in funding, organizations across the state are asking for $75 million in order to properly provide services for survivors.
We urge you to call your local representatives before September 30th. Let them know that the state budget proposed will not effectively help survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
