  • During an assaultive
    situation, stay away from
    the bathroom or any
    room that only has one
    way  of entry-stay away
    from the bedroom or
    kitchen where there may
    be weapons or items that
    can be used as weapons
  • Get to a room with a
    phone, call 911 from a
    "land line" phone, so
    police can know your
    location
  • Tell someone about the
    assault and show them
    your injuries
  • Take pictures of injuries
    or damage to the house
  • Seek medical attention
    and tell them what
    happened
  • Give neighbors
    permission to call the
    police if they suspect
    something is wrong
  • Safety plan with your
    children, escape routes
    and how to get help
  • Talk to children about the
    abuse not being their fault
    and that it's dangerous for
    them to "get in the
    middle" of a fight
  • Keep a diary or journal of
    physical as well as
    emotional and verbal
abuse.  Give a copy to a
    trusted family member or
    friend
  • Get a cell phone and keep
it in a safe place in case of
    emergency
  • Make extra copies of both
    you and your assailants
    vehicle keys, keep the keys
    somewhere outside the
    house, in case you're
    locked out.  Your
    assailant may damage
    your vehicle during an
    assault so you can't leave,
    this will enable to leave
    without your vehicle.
  • Have extra money for gas
    and phone calls if you
    leave in a hurry
  • Keep copies of important
    papers and provide them
    to a trusted family
    member or friend in case
    you need them later
